Physical properties of graphite

Graphite is a non-metallic crystal composed of carbon that has the following physical properties:

Electrical conductivity: Graphite is a good conductive material. Due to the special arrangement of carbon atoms in graphite, it is possible to form conjugated π bond structures, resulting in electrons moving freely in the plane. Therefore, graphite has good electrical conductivity and can be used as a conductive material.

Thermal conductivity: Graphite also has good thermal conductivity. Due to the layered structure of graphite, heat can be effectively conducted along the layer direction, making the heat transfer of graphite very efficient.

Strength and hardness: Graphite has lower strength and hardness perpendicular to the plane direction, but has higher strength and hardness in the in-plane direction. This is due to the weak van der Waals forces between the graphite layers and the strong covalent bonds within the layers.

Softness and lubricity: Due to the weak van der Waals forces between graphite layers, graphite has good softness and lubricity. Sliding between layers allows the graphite to reduce friction and wear in the event of interference or friction.

Optical properties: Graphite has special optical properties for visible light. In the direction perpendicular to the plane, the graphite appears black, and in the direction of the plane, the graphite appears metallic or gray.

Insoluble: Graphite is insoluble in common solvents, including water, acids and bases. This means that graphite has good stability in many chemical environments.

It is important to note that the physical properties of graphite can be affected by factors such as its crystal structure, purity, pressure and temperature. In addition, graphite also has other application properties, such as high temperature stability and chemical inertia, making it widely used in many fields, such as batteries, lubricants, thermal conductivity and structural materials.
