Both graphite and carbon are substances made of the element carbon, but they differ in structure and properties.
Graphite is a carbon compound with a layered cambium structure, consisting of hexagonal carbon atoms. These carbon atoms are arranged in flat layers and held together by loose bonds. Graphite has good electrical and thermal conductivity and is a good lubricating material. Due to the weak bond structure between the graphite layers, graphite has good stripping properties and can be used to make pencil leads, lubricating materials and conductive materials.
Carbon is an amorphous or crystalline element, the simplest form of which is graphite-like carbon, also known as graphene. Graphene is a two-dimensional lattice structure composed of a single layer of carbon atoms, which has very high strength, electrical and thermal conductivity. In addition to graphene, carbon also exists in many forms, such as diamonds, carbon black and activated carbon. These forms of carbon differ in structure and properties, for example diamonds are formed from carbon with a three-dimensional lattice structure and have a very high hardness.
Both graphite and carbon are made of carbon, but their structure and properties are different, so they are also different in application. Graphite is mainly used in the fields of lubrication and electricity conduction, while carbon is widely used in materials science, electronics, chemical industry and other fields.
